How photoluminescent pigments are applied
Manufacturers mix a luminous powder with binders to create a paste that can be printed, syringe-applied or tampo-printed into recesses. Thick, hand-applied fills and inset plots hold more pigment and therefore give greater initial brightness; thin printed layers conserve detail but lose punch quickly after lights-out. The application method determines how the lume wears and how easy it is to re-lume during service.
Tritium tubes and sealed self-luminescence
Sealed glass tubes filled with tritium provide a steady glow without charging from external light. They are installed as tiny vials for indices and hands and do not require repainting, but their brightness decays predictably over years. Because the tubes are manufactured and sealed, they change how dials and hands are designed from the outset.
Quality control, longevity and finish
Testing matters. Producers check charge/decay curves for pigments and confirm tube seals for tritium. Surface finish affects perceived brightness; a satin dial around an applied marker reflects light differently than a glossy one. Re-luming is possible for pigment-based dials; tritium requires replacement of tubes when they dim beyond specification.
What this means for buyers
If immediate punch is the priority, look for thick applications and raised plots that trap more pigment. If constant, maintenance-free glow is desired, tritium-equipped pieces offer that at the cost of eventual tube replacement. Watch design and serviceability are dictated as much by the chosen lume system as by the movement inside.
